"If someone had told me back then I would be looking for a dog for comfort I would’ve laughed,” said Lucian,
who could never have imagined owning a dog just a few months
ago. “Prior to working with Jack’s, I was
terrified of dogs and had never even taken care of any animal before.” In the span of three months,
Lucian went from being
scared of dogs to training a service dog.
It all started when Lucian reached out to Bonnie, the head of the rescue, about the possibility of getting
a service animal despite their fears. Bonnie not only supported
the idea but also invited Lucian to stay
at the rescue for two weeks. Lucian didn't need the full two weeks to meet the dog they would inevitably
take home. Within the
first half-hour at the rescue, they met Raven. Raven made an immediate
impression by remaining calm during their first encounter, becoming the first dog Lucian wasn't
afraid of. Over the two weeks, they bonded deeply, training together six times a day. They
learned how to walk on a leash, follow basic commands, and stay calm around
other animals.
Despite Raven's stubbornness, she quickly picked up new skills.
Near the end of the stay, the thought of leaving without Raven felt unimaginable. With Bonnie's guidance,
Lucian adopted Raven. Since then, the two have been inseparable,
and Lucian wouldn't have it any other way.
“It's impressive what Bonnie does with those dogs. I appreciate everything Bonnie did; it completely changed my life.”
Their journey from fear to companionship has been transformative, showcasing the profound impact of patience,
understanding, and the right support. Lucian and Raven's
story is a testament to the healing power of animals and
the incredible work done by rescue organizations like Bonnie's.
